Water Damage Claims

When you stop and realize that about two-thirds of the earth’s surface is covered by water and we need water to survive, it makes sense that at some point, and possibly multiple points in our lives, we will sustain some type of water damage to our house, business or personal property.

You may need the financial assistance that would come from submitting an insurance claim for water damage. Even if you do not need the financial assistance, you have been paying your premiums for situations such as these. In our opinion, you should receive the benefits provided by your policy you paid for to the fullest extent that your policy allows. However, to do this, you will need to file a claim for the water damage. The process does not stop with merely filing a claim and is only the beginning of what could be a very daunting process.

If you own a property, there are many ways water can damage it. Water can enter your home from the roof, siding or gutters causing damage. It can enter from the ground such as during a flood. You likely have a few faucets with each faucet having two supply lines (hot & cold) and at least one sink drain. In one sink, there are many areas that could leak and cause extensive water damage. You have supply lines to toilets that also have drains. There is the waste line that could leak. Let us not forget the heating and air-conditioning systems that can also leak and cause extensive damage to a home or business. If you have a pool or in-ground sprinkler system, this can increase the chances of having water damage as well. What about that icemaker or washing machine which get used every day? They can too eventually leak.

If an average water main supplies water to a house or building at 30 gallons per minute, in only one hour there could easily be 1800 gallons of water running rampant though your home damaging everything in its path. If this happens before you go to bed or while away, then do the simple math. You could end up with your own indoor lake and all of your possessions destroyed.

The water can damage structural and electrical components of your house or business including your inventory and personal belongings. If not dried properly and promptly then the water-damaged items could easily and rapidly develop mold. Some people are allergic to mold. Some types of mold are toxic at elevated levels. Now it becomes a health issue on top of damaging your property. One water damage incident could easily shut down your home or business forcing you to suspend operations or leave your home.
